What a great story. I have a watch that appears nearly identical. It is a UMF Rhula from what was once called"Eastern Germany" I believe. I really am attached to this little guy. It beats at about 18k/hr but keeps good time. How nice to have this heirloom in your family.
I bought this EXACT watch on Ebay a couple years ago. It needs a service, so I have stopped wearing it, but you reminded me what a great piece it is. Movement also has "Tissot" engraved on it....
For true bang-to-buck, i think there are many microbrands that stand out. One example is Detomaso which i am wearing now. For $150 this Sen Remo Diver has 300m water resistance, good looks, applied BGW9 indicies, sapphire crystal with AR. Yes, a quartz movement.
I do love that Longines though and respect a great, heritage brand!
