commented on Changing watches with the weather ·

I live where you get all four seasons - hot and humid summers and cold dark winters - so I tend to wear watches seasonally. In general, I wear smaller, slimmer, lighter watches in the depths of winter. When its real cold out, I'd rather not tuck a large or thick watch under tight sleeves, jacket cuffs, or gloves. Come summer, I tend to wear my larger and thicker watches. Spring and fall? Whatever I feel like, though it's usually dictated by whatever shirt or jacket I'm wearing on a given day.

At the end of the day, I want whatever watch I'm wearing to be comfortable and I have no problem not wearing a watch for a few months if it's not comfortable for how I'm dressing.

Damaskos with adjustable bezels are bidirectional no matter their markings.

commented on Which brand got you started? ·

My first was a Victorinox that my grandfather gave me when I needed a watch in college. He had it since the early 90s and had not worn it in years. Not the most attractive design, but a very nice watch for a teenager - very thin (<10mm), water resistant (100m), sapphire crystal (that I eventually shattered), and it looked good on whatever strap I put on it.

I blame that watch for my love of thin cases and appreciation for quartz movements.

More like the 61000 bot votes bought by a very cocky Italian Seiko forum. They've been bragging for a few days now about how their design 'won' in Europe and Japan in every comments section, forum, and IG page that posts the winning designs. They did this last year too.

commented on Bites: How have Hodinkee got it so wrong??? ADDITIONAL: TIMEFACTORS DROP THIS WEEKEND ·

Bold of you to assume that Hodinkee, especially their Shop, is being intellectually honest. They're here to sell watches, first and foremost, and they will spin whatever line of bunk they have to do so. I also wouldn't be surprised if some of the particularly inappropriate models (like the Alpinist reissue) are there because they're selling slow and there's financial impetuous to get rid of them.

commented on With quartz watches/movements - At what price level do you start to get good quality ones?(Or if that is too subjective: What quartz movements are good quality and won't break the bank?" ·

They were originally advertised at +/- 10s/year, but they aren't thermocompensated, so they tend to run a lot faster if not constantly worn. Bulova doesn't advertise an accuracy rating anymore for that reason.

The problem with the 8J41 is that it doesn't have user-serviceable timing adjustment, unlike 9Fs. When the crystal ages and timing drifts - which happens on all quartz movements - you won't be able to dial the timing back to it's factory rating. 9Fs and many older Seiko quartz movements can be adjusted by a watchmaker or owner and brought back to factory accuracy with the proper equipment to read the timing signal.
