It’s so you know which way is up. If the red marker is on the bottom the dial will be upside down and you won’t be able to tell the time.

My question is, if the watch case is blocking all the ionizing radiation then how is the Geiger counter / radiometer picking up such high levels? Doesn’t that mean there’s leakage out the case?

Sorry I had to nerd out a bit because I was wondering. Apparently it’s probably “nitriding”, which is case hardening with nitrogen atoms.
