Being honest about what watches you like

I'm about three months into this hobby and while I started with one Timex Ironman watch, I now have six watches (Hamilton, San Martin, Steel Dive, Seiko 5 (x2), Gshock 2100B) and that number should be about double - but I'm exercising almost super human restraint.

I'm reading about watches every day - enjoying different parts of this hobby everyday, and learning about myself every day.  Everyone has their own priorities, their own motivations, and their own budgets - no two people are the same.  Of course I want to buy 10 more watches, if I could - in fact I could name them right now (Moonwatch, Rolex Explorer, Cartier Tank, IWC Mark XX, Oris Big Crown Pointer, Pelagos FXD, Seiko Tuna, orange Doxa, Grand Seiko, Marathon Artic GSAR   -- but I don't because budget :(

The point I'm so inarticulately making is, I try to wait till I'm really excited about a watch before I buy it.  I really want a Speedmaster and I really wanted a GShock B2100.  I didn't really want my Tuna homage, but I got lucky and I really like it.

My next watch is probably the San Martin 62Mas homage.  I've glanced through the whole San Martin catalog and the 62Mas homage - is the one I'm most excited to experience - that watch passed the mustard among some of these members and I want to experience it.

I haven't sold a watch yet, but I think that's part of the experience and being true to my goals going into this.  Buying a new watch is fun, there is an initial excitement.  Nothing wrong with trying to chase that feeling, but I want more of a long term attachment to my watches.  I have a 10 watch box and a 3 watch roll - so my collection won't exceed that.   I haven't spent more than $500 on a watch yet and I'm not letting myself outside that limit - till I'm sure of what I'm doing.

I really enjoy watches, but it's not yet a compulsion or something I define myself by.  I could stop tomorrow (I think) if I needed to.  But I won't because it's a great hobby and I'm enjoying it.  Thanks for listening.

Righton bro!! Have you checked out the Heimdallr 62mas?? It's half the price but a bit bigger at 41mm. It's great homage quality.

My all time favorite is my Hamilton Khaki Field hand wind. Under $500 and a really nice timepiece for me. You should also check out Orient. They have very high quality affordable watches. They may have something you could love.

10 watch box and 3 watch roll and once filled that's it?

10 +3=13 and that's bad luck. You need, at least ,another roll to fill. Maybe another box, just to be safe.

I've bought more watches, but I'm at a similar stage. Keeping my purchased in the affordable range until I learn more about myself. One thing I've decided is that 39mm is my thing. It's helped clarify my thinking and my choices. Good hunting!

I started off with Seikos skx's and enjoyed them for years.  Started modding and blew a ton of money on tools and parts.  Then bought a few entry level luxury pieces and vintage, which snowballed into higher end watches.  Those watches required service... Right now I am just kinda in a buying freeze and considering selling some stuff off.  It got out of hand for a while and I have money tied up in watches that are broken(in need of service) or that I dont wear.

i started with one watchbox, and then some of my friends gave me 2 more watch. now i gotta fill two watchbox. its crazy hobby 😂

One way to slow purchases is to avoid purchasing unless you’ve at least had the watch on your wrist. It’s so easy to buy online, but if you can hold out to try it on, it’s slows the pace and it is more likely to be a love when you make the actual purchase.

👍 13 + GShocks (can have a bunch they don't need a box) + 1 on wrist + 1 or 2 in for service, warranty, returns, etc. With some forethought he can turn that 13 into 20 or so. I say "Best of luck". 🤣

I've gone down the rabbit hole and I can confidently claim that I am now an addict 😂... seriously cutting down and have only 12 pieces with 6 core pieces and the other 6 will be in rotation for trades/sale

I’m similar.  I am getting ready to build a three luxury watch collection to go with my three entry level luxury watches and three “enthusiast” watches.

I'm constantly stopping myself from impulse buying watches I like, instead of watches I love.

I hope to be the guy that has a small collection of watches that blow my mind, instead of someone with a large collection of 'nice' watches but nothing that truely excites me.
