Buying from an AD for the first time

I've typically only gotten lower to mid-tier watches directly from online retailers but I'm looking to purchase my first luxury watch for my upcoming birthday. I've heard online that buying more popular models from an AD can be incredibly difficult if you're a first-time customer as ADs tend to favor repeat customers in regards to waitlists etc. Is there any truth to this? What are your experiences like with ADs?

I think it depends on the AD. I bought a Breitling from an AD, because I actually wanted it. That purchase wasn’t to build a relationship. I told them I also wanted a Submariner, and then I got a call 2 months later that the Sub came in. I know there‘s a wait on the in demand models, but each persons experience varies greatly on wait times.

Depends on the watch and AD. First time and want a Rolex? You will need to get very lucky to make that happen. In reality, there really is no waitlist without a purchase history at most ADs for Rolex, Patek, AP, etc.  You may get lucky and perhaps they have an Air King, Yachtmaster, or Explorer they pull out if they are in need of sales at the time you are in.

Other brands? You are going to be fine, with few exceptions (Some Tudors and the Omega Snoopy for example). Be nice, and talk about what you are interested in. Don't be afraid to try things on. Also, try non-hype brands, most GS, IWC, Panerai, etc ADs will roll out the red carpet, have drinks ready etc for their clients. I find they are often very willing to talk and even negotiate on pieces.

Happy birthday and enjoy!

I buy Grand Seiko and Omega watches on their online boutique. No hassles. I don't even leave the house. You can buy JLC online too or call their phone line.
