The one that got away

I just recently started this watch hobby so I was watching many many Youtube videos, browsing Chrono24, IG, etc for used watches, etc. I figured it’d be a good way to get into the hobby.

So while going through the local for sale ads, I saw to my disbelief a Glushitte Original PanoMaticLunar in perfect condition, recently serviced with all papers for 5K USD, about 1/2 price as new. This is something that I would never even consider to be in my budget.

I couldn’t believe it. So I was monitoring it, researching it on YouTube and reviews and articles on Glashutte Original the company and on and on. Then I saw a video by Teddy Baldasarre about not owning too much watch because then the watch owns you, etc and that made sense and so I hesitated and didn’t contact the seller.

But then recently I saw the ad disappear and the watch was likely sold. That was my Grail watch and I would have been One and Done! Imagine that, my first watch is also my last. Well I probably would have gotten an AliExpress special as my daily and call it a day 😀

Alas, it was not meant to be and I’m back in the Used ads looking for my next Unicorn….mayhe next time I won’t listen to Teddy and just go in debt 😀

I read a story here about someone finding an Omega Railmaster for an incredible price and bought it on the spot so got me wondering 🤔

On the bright side, I did ‘save’ 5K.

That would have been an epic first watch purchase.

It really was not meant to be (yet).

Any watch (yes, even a Grail) is just a watch. Going into debt for one is not recommended unless it's at zero percent interest and the payments do not wreck your monthly finances.

That's what happens when you allow other people's opinions to greatly influence yours. Sometimes it's just best to go with your gut.

I think this was a good thing. If you’ve just recently started the hobby, the fun part is getting to experience different watches. To use a cliché, it’s the journey, not the destination that counts. Getting a grail too early an being “done” would kinda remove that excitement you’d get from discovering more about watches. Ultimately, if you do get the GO Panomaticlunar years from now, it’ll be more rewarding after having had the chance to refine your taste and enjoy some other cool (and cheaper probably) watches along the way.
