What Are Your Thoughts on Heirloom Watches?

Let’s talk about Heirloom Watches👨‍👦

THE RANT
-
A fantasied topic within the watch community for years. We’ve all had that wet dream of passing on our first watch, grail watch or even an entire collection to our offspring right before our demise (me included). To some this is an over idolized symbolic tradition… I personally love the concept, but I will not personally make a purchase with the some purpose  of handing it down sin or daughter.

THE WATCH
-
Anyways… This is my dad’s #skagen.
My dad is far from gone, he is a healthy 40 yo man, who saw no interest in this watch anymore. It’s a 39 mm titanium Skagen on a metal mesh bracelet. Incredibly thin and sleek due to its quartz movement. It’s scratched the hell up since my dad actually wore it (as you should). It’s light, functional, and Danish, and I love it.

CONCLUSION
-
Collect what you love, and do whatever the f*uck you want within this hobby. 🖤

A heirloom, watch or not, is just something your family possesses that is intended to be handed down from generation to generation. While the term usually incites the idea of something super valuable monetarily, I don’t think that this necessarily needs to be the case... I imagine it could just be something that your family holds great sentimental value towards. Under this definition, you father’s Skagen could fit the bill! Like you said, collect what you love.

YES! 1000%. In a time we’re everything is inflated and this watch hobby is evolving, going back the basics of collecting is a must. Thanks for the words of wisdom 💯

Yes, heirlooms don't need to be expensive.  They are immensely valuable because they belong to our families.  Not everybody has a bunch of expensive stuff to hand down - 99% of us don't.  My parents are still with me, thankfully, but I'm lucky enough to have a few of my grandmother's belongings (including her fridge!).  The item that I cherish most is a juicer made from uranium glass.  Not expensive, just really really cool.
