Merry Christmas from the South Dakota Capitol!

Pierre is the state capital of South Dakota. It’s the second smallest state capital in the nation, and one of the only capital cities not connected to the interstate. It is also the town in which I grew up, and will always be home no matter how far away I live. One of the things that makes it so uniquely home to me is that it where you can find what is probably my favorite building in the world: the South Dakota Capitol.

I grew up going to this building, learning how our government functioned, working while in high school as a legislative page, and even working with legislators and policy organizations as an adult. I love this building. But the best time of year is when they fill every floor of the Capitol with live Christmas trees. It’s a beautiful site, a historic building filled with the scent of evergreen trees, all glowing warmly for any and all to come and see.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve been able to visit, and so to return home with my family, to share a childhood tradition with my children, and see the next generation filled with the wonder of the season, and of this incredible building is truly magical. It may not be Rockefeller Center or the North Pole, but it’s its own brand of spectacular nonetheless:

I love watches because I love traditions, I love those things that are timeless, and that can be appreciated across generations. The things in life that seem so simple (like a 3-6-9 dial) but reflect generations of striving, pushing, and working to pass something on, to leave something behind. Watches both are very much products of generational effort, and also tools which remind me to continue to pursue my efforts, traditions, and heritage as well. We only have so much time and effort to give in this world, use it well, my friends.

Merry Christmas.

Great photos.

Thanks! I’m by no means a photographer, but this time of year, it’s hard to take a bad photo in that building.

Your gorgeous pictures made my lovely wife smile. It conjured up fine memories of her annual summer visits to Pierre and Fort Pierre to visit the extended family homes and farms where both of her parents grew up. She has done very well for herself in the Big City but will always have a soft spot for South Dakota. Merry Christmas and Thanks for a Wonderful post.

Oh that makes me so happy to know she’s familiar with Pierre as well. It’s not an oft travelled to destination, so it’s fun to know someone here knows it. Merry Christmas to both you and her!
