1 year of collecting

Got myself a new box and now its just about 1 year since I got my first real watch. I got into this rabbit hole in January last year when I bought the last ECA Poseidon on ECAs website.

Image

ECA is a Swedish microbrand and this one is limited to 120 pieces. It has a power reserve indicator and an AM/PM indicator as well as a gmt/dive bezel. Its very tooltastic and have just the right amount of funkyness.

Image

The next watch I got was a Seiko Srpd that I modded, put the case upside down to scratch that field watch Itch that I had. Was looking into a khaki field or similar at this time, but I have since aquired a field piece so I might build this into something else soon.

Image

I found out you could also mod the Casio Duro, so I got one and thought the "Submarliner" pun was hilarious so just had to make one. I coffee stained the hands and also changed to a ceramic bezel insert. Might give it a sapphire crystal in the future.

Image

By this time I started to be fascinated by watches ties to history and what I lacked was a dress watch so to scratch that reverso/cartier itch I went with a Lip. The Lip model that Charles De Gaul gave to Winston Churchill as a gift for the help France recieved during the second world war.

Image

I had looked at both the Vertex and the Timor of the dirty dozen watches and I knew I wanted one. However I saw Aeschbach since a while back that they had had an acrylic Crystal and 50m of wr with an automatic movement and it was not quite what I wanted, but then suddenly they released an updated version, manual wind, sapphire crystal and 100m of wr. Perfect. Aeschbach too have history from the second world war just like the Dirty Dozen watches, but instead of being issued to the British, the Aeschbach were issued to german soldiers.

So what next? A chronograph maybe? How about first watch in space a Strela? Or A Smiths Everest as a first watch on mt Everest? Or what about a Tornek Rayville?

I just wanted to share some pics of my watches that I like a lot.

Thank you. It shines incredibly in different lights as the domed crystal and the inner and outer dial is brushed in different directions and it is incredibly affordable too!

With Shturmanskie Gagarins, you basically have three options:

  • Hard Mode: Search for an original in “correct” status, and doing your homework to hunt one down and finding a person to work on it should the worst come.

  • Medium: Find a good-looking Franken watch. They are affordable but no telling what movements they use.

  • Easy: Get a modern Shturmanskie reissue. Honestly, I recommend this one the most, since all of these (as far as I’m aware) use Vostok movements. And the benefit of that is that you would be able to get it fixed/serviced more easily than a vintage movement, since Vostok movements have been more or less the same for 35 years. Certain ones aren’t always in stock but you can probably find one that’s close or close enough with som digging.

Good idea on taking it slow, too.

This is a really nice, well balanced collection for only being a year in. I look forward to seeing how it evolves.

Maybe I will do an update in a year 😁 And thank you 🙏

great collection!!! Instead of the Smith, take a look at the super Antarctic from Nevada Grenchen, great watch... in Germany, chronofactum has the watches in its range

Most older watches will be a bit franken from repairs over the years is that what you mean? I figured I would get it on the used market either way if I go modern or vintage

Very nice indeed. I see you like Nato straps. Good looking box too. I'm looking for a 8/10 watch box. What one is that and where from?

This one is Rothwell and they are available on amazon. I think it feels solid and quality seems good from my now 6h of owning it 😁 They also have other colours

That is likely to also be the case, but what i meant was watches that weren’t born Shturmanskies at all, but are an amalgamation of old or newly made parts, not ones that are mostly “correct” with a part or two that is not correct to he model

·

This is such a strange but fascinating collection! I love it! That modded Seiko with an upside down case is so awesome!

Ah, I understand. I think I know too little of the correct ones, but maybe its time to study 🧐
