The Rolex GMT-Master II has cemented its position as a highly practical choice among Rolex's sports watches, especially noted for its dual-time zone feature. This makes it a favorite for travelers over other specialized models designed for diving or racing. The GMT-Master II’s introduction in the 1267xx series, notably with the reference 126719BLRO in white gold, brings a luxurious twist to the line. This edition, unveiled at Baselworld 2019, is available with either a meteorite or a midnight blue dial, adding an extra layer of allure to the already prestigious pilot's watch.

Historical Context:

Originally launched in 1955 with the iconic red and blue "Pepsi" bezel, the GMT-Master was designed for pilots. This design element was a nod to Pan American Airways' colors and has remained a defining feature. The transition to ceramic "Cerachrom" bezels and the addition of the "Batman" reference with a blue and black bezel were significant milestones, culminating in the release of the ceramic Pepsi bezel in 18k white gold.

Distinctive Features of the Ref. 126719BLRO:

This version stands out for its white gold composition and the choice between a unique meteorite dial and a midnight blue dial, making it a luxurious embodiment of Rolex’s GMT-Master II series. Notably, this model was among the first to house the Caliber 3285 movement, enhancing its value and appeal.

The Allure of the Meteorite Dial:

The vast majority of meteorite dials on the market originate from a single iron-nickel alloy meteorite, which scientists believe hurtled through our atmosphere millions of years ago. The infamous space rock, now known as the Gibeon Meteorite, crashed in what is now Namibia and scattered the rock’s fragments over a large area measuring roughly 240 miles by 75 miles. Most of the meteorite’s pieces are located near the village of Gibeon, where the local Nama people first discovered it. However, it wasn’t until 1836 when English captain J. E. Alexander had samples of the meteorite examined that the rock was confirmed to be of extraterrestrial origin.

This rare material is incredibly popular in jewelry and watchmaking for the striking Widmanstätten pattern that the nickel-iron crystals produce. The striations seen on the Rolex 126719 dial were formed by Kamacite and Teanite, which appear as ribbons and fine grain material. This crystal formation was created as the rock (which was once molten) cooled as it traveled through space. The meteorite slices are then treated with chemicals such as nitric acid or ferric chloride to bring out their natural crystalline pattern. Because of the Widmanstätten pattern’s geometric nature, the meteorite needs to be sliced at the correct angle to achieve the design seen on the GMT-Master II, and because it is a naturally occurring pattern, no two Rolex meteorite dials will be the same.

The Daytona and Day-Date became the first Rolex watches to display the time on a meteorite dial, followed by the Datejust, Pearlmaster, and GMT-Master II. There is also a small slice of meteorite that depicts the moon on the now discontinued Rolex Cellini Moonphase, although its use of meteorite is limited to a single element rather than the entire dial itself. Gibeon Meteorite is one of the rarest materials found on Earth, and any Rolex watch featuring the material is likely to command a premium for its rarity alone. In addition to being the only GMT-Master II ever to feature a meteorite dial, the ref. 126719BLRO is also the only example of a modern GMT with a light-colored dial.

Rolex was among the first watchmaking companies to incorporate meteorite into its timepieces, although the trend is continuously catching on with more manufacturers. The Gibeon Meteorites are now protected by law, and it’s prohibited to remove any of their material from where they are located. Luckily, Rolex acquired its slices of the meteorite before the law was passed, and the brand creates meteorite dials on a very limited basis, only further adding to their exclusivity.

Movement and Performance:

Powered by the Caliber 3285 movement, this GMT-Master II model promises exceptional performance. This movement underscores Rolex's innovation, boasting 10 patents that enhance functionality. Equipped with all Rolex’ in-house goodies, the movement features a Chronergy escapement, a Parachrom hairspring and delivers a robust power reserve of 70 hours. Like all Perpetual movements made by Rolex, the 3285 has a Superlative-Chronometer certification – COSC and internal certifications, resulting in -2/+2 sec. per day accuracy.

Design and Wearability:

The 18k white gold case and Oyster bracelet provide a luxurious heft, while the Easylink extension system offers practical wearability adjustments. Its water resistance up to 100 meters ensures durability for everyday wear and travel.

Given its exclusivity and innovative features, the white gold GMT-Master II commands a premium, with the meteorite dial version particularly sought after.

This refined take on the iconic GMT-Master II underscores Rolex's dedication to combining functionality with luxury, making it a coveted piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

That dial is amazing!

I find myself repeating this, but the dial's dynamism is unparalleled! It showcases an array of patterns that shift with the light's angle, making it the most captivating dial I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Grand Seiko dials, impressive in their own right, simply can't compete with the meteorite's natural allure. In fact, I didn't hesitate to trade three of my Grand Seikos for the daily joy of admiring this meteorite dial. It was an easy choice, underscored by the dial's unmatched beauty and interstellar intrigue.

A stunning timepiece for sure Paul!

Thank you, Danilo! Acquiring this meteorite Pepsi has elevated my watch collection standards—for better or worse. 🙈💸 It's an exhilarating path, and I'm eager to see how my collection evolves in the coming year. This shift hints at a more expensive hobby ahead, reminding me of the passion and investment it entails. It's an exciting, albeit somewhat intimidating, path forward in my watch collecting journey. Cheers, my friend! 🍾🥂
