Upmarket alternatives to Seiko 5 SNKL23

A bit of a strange request. Normally people look for cheaper alternatives to X, I’m trying to find not necessarily luxury alternatives but a higher quality watch with similar looks to the SNKL23. I was considering the Omega Aqua Terra but it has a 39 mm case and I’m afraid it won’t wear as beautifully as the SNKL23. Basically:

- a black dial GADA

- 37 mm case (would consider +/- 1 mm)

- pinstripe dial will be a huge plus

- compact lug to lug

- Swiss is a plus, not necessary

- automatic preferred, not a must

- Microbrands welcome

Any ideas?

I would look into Grand Seiko for sure.

The old Seiko Sarb033, Grand Seiko SGBX261 (high accuracy quartz), Citizen 1050-59E, Orient Star Classic, Traska Commuter, Omega AT 2504.50 (pre-owned), Tudor BB36, Sinn 556i

Thanks a lot!! These are some great suggestions as well! I had no idea of that older AT reference, I was mainly researching pinstriped 2010s models, so that’s great. No pinstripes but bang on 37 mm. The GS is another great piece, no problem with the quartz movement. Now, together with some the watches suggested by JJMM1983, the challenge will be deciding myself for one… the race is on!

Yeah, the older AT is really nice. There's also a quartz version (2518.50), which is often less expensive and super practical.

I sympathize with your search, as a few years ago, I was looking to upgrade my SNKL45, so tried pretty much all of the watches I listed above. In the end, I wound up with the GS SBGX261.

Happy hunting!
