Next questions…why do you want a watch, and do you have any special requirements,I.e. mechanical vs quartz, automatic, vs manual, Swiss vs Japanese, want to swim in it and/or wear with a suit.
Maybe all or none or something else is important to you. What are your expectations?
For what you’re saying I’d look at Tissot and Hamilton. I’ve got a titanium Hamilton Khaki Automatic
And a Tissot PRC200.
Both mechanical and both under $1000.
Two other Swiss brands that don’t get enough attention I think are Victorinox here’s an Alliance Mechanical
And Certina.
And a wild card I just came across is Echo/Neutra. They’re actually an Italian brand, but they’re Swiss made. I just got their Bug Moon moon phase watch and I love it.
A proper Swiss made moon phase for under $1000, with 100m wr with a screw down crown, hacking and date complications as well.

Swiss and mechanical doesn’t really narrow it down too much but if any of them look at all interesting we can narrow it down some. Also you said you don’t always wear a watch. Knowing the occasions could help.
My recommendation, forget the mechanical and choose a quartz. It's tougher, more accurate, more convenient, etc.
Titanium is lighter. I'd recommend it.
I'd start with a cheaper watch so you can start learning what you like. It's almost impossible to know before you've spent a month with a watch. Size, comfort, etc.
And look for a flat back panel, not raised one. More comfy.

Watches are great accessories ,reflect style and offer simplicity
I prefer Swiss and as for my first watch I prefer mechanical
I wear watches only on occasions

Agree with the above. Consider offerings from Tissot and Hamilton.
Christopher Ward and Zodiac are two more brands that start under $1K.

Oh also I avoid leather. Really nasty industry. Feel free to Google if you want.
