I wind back and forth out of habit and never feel any resistance on winding back. I can only guess that it may help in preventing you from locking the crown.
Define a squally in future, barring limited editions, Gnomon is a good place to start. I bought a 1545 root beer on their site for about the same price and have been happy with it.

The Merkur big-eye is worth a look and runs on an ST19. It does need winding though and doesn't have a display case back which is a shame given the movements looks.
I've had the same experienced particularly with positional variation on the 6r35 Seiko. However when worn it doesn't seem to make very much of a difference.
