Determine Whether a Watch Fits

Hey all. Firstly, for those who wear massively oversized, super chunky watches; go ahead. Nobody should tell you not to. However, such people are not likely reading a post regarding how to find whether a watches really fits or not. So, for everyone else, here goes.

The main factor is to keep the Watch from extending over past the edge of your wrist. Some people seem to look at a watch that is 40mm, 41mm, 38mm, and think that is essential. Not really. That dimension gives a clue, but isn’t as important as lug-to-lug length. Mark at Long Island Watch has done a good thing putting that dimension on his site, and many YouTube reviewers include that; which is good, but then all the YouTubers tell you, I have a 7” wrist, 7 1/4”, 7 3/8”, 18cm, 16cm, which doesn’t really tell you much. You may have noticed, people have different wrist shapes.

The important factor is, how wide across is your wrist where you wear you watch. Mine is 52mm across, so for myself I take off 10% and call my max lug-to-lug length 47; therefore looking for watches with that dimension being less than 47mm. Take a look a the picture of my SKX next to my Khaki Field 38mm. The SKX is obviously larger diameter but its lug-to-lug is 45mm while the Khaki Field is 46.5mm. So yes, diameter counts, but not as much.

So the main measure is your wrist width (not circumference) vs lug-to-lug length.

Finally, my wrist is pretty flat, but many people have rounded wrists. If that is your case, then case shape may be more important to you than to me. The side shot shows (hopefully you can tell) the Hamilton case rounds at the lugs more than the Seiko. A more rounded case may be more essential if your wrist is rounded. Also, female end links or going with a strap over a bracelet may help the fit.

Hope this help. Have a great Saturday crunchers!

Sorry I missed that one. It is on target.

Agree that lug to lug is one of the most important measurements of a watch! I don’t go over 48mm with my 7.2” wrist. I also consider thickness but not as much as L2L (I wear most of my watches under dress shirts).

I agree lug to lug is more important than diameter.
