Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I've had a few pieces over the years (Seiko, Casio, Festina, Tissot) but never considered them a collection per se. Then I discovered websites like ABlogtoWatch and Hodinkee and educated myself on mechanical timepieces. It was only when I bought my first Rolex (a GMT Master II ref 116710LN) that I caught the collecting bug.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Swatch Scuba 200 SDN 100 "Blue Moon"

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

When the ceramic Daytona was first released in 2016, I almost immediately went to my local AD and requested one. Stainless steel Daytonas were already hard to acquire but nothing like what was about to happen AFTER the 116510LN was released. I was 2nd on the list. In mid-2016 I also emailed the AD in Hawaii where I purchased my first 1st Rolex, the all-black ceramic GMT Master II, and asked to be put on the list for one there. Only 6 months later, I got an email from the AD in Hawaii stating they got one in but I only had 2 days to respond, and I'd have to physically pick it up. I just couldn't bring myself to say "Yes!" and buy a plane ticket to Hawaii just for a watch. So, I passed. I immediately regretted my decision to pass on it. However luck was on my side. A few months later, my patience was paid off when my local AD gave me the call. They got it in and, this time, I did not pass. So, that's the story of how I acquired my 116500LN in the "early" days of the ceramic Daytona hype.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Be open-minded and enjoy your journey. Where you start rarely is where you'll end up.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Cartier, Rolex, Breitling, Hamilton, Porsche Design

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

A "grail" is often a mere vision. It is both tangible and intangible all at once. As I've embarked on my quest for "the" grail, its shape has changed many times. It emerges out of the fog of my mind, briefly coming into view only to be obscured again. Just out of grasp. Clarity will come in time. But not today...
