Seiko 5 Sport - Peanuts

Funny how things like this come along. I was just wondering how I could bring back the fun in my watches, when this little thing came up in YouTube:

I grew up with Charlie Brown, so my inner kid was jumping up and down begging for this one. Beaverbrooks had next-day delivery so I ordered.

I gave my SKX013 to my daughter, so I'm familiar with the watch history of this piece. Here are my impressions - good and bad:

The nato - while perfectly fine, is not my thing, so I paired it with a white Barton Elite silicon rubber strap. The nato makes the watch hover really high on the wrist. While its a good colour, I think most people will want to add their own straps:

The case is better finished than the SKX, but it is thinner and certainly less heavy. The bezel action is a little tinny, and the bezel doesn't correctly align (typical Seiko). I do find this a little irksome, given that Chinese brands under £100 seem to get their bezels to align.

The movement is the Seiko 4r36 hacking and hand winding, with day-date complication. Out of the box, its running at minus 3 seconds per day - so just within COSC.

But the biggest impression is the size. for a 38mm watch, it feels very small and light. Some will like that. Others won't. But as a limited edition watch for Seiko's 55 year anniversary goes, its a cracker. Definitely a watch you could get for a child - trouble is, you might end up wearing it more than they do!

I generally don't like cartoons on watches but that's ingenious! I wonder if Citizen makes the identical watch with a 9 instead of the smash. That would still be a great looking watch. I would buy both, and wear one on each arm.

I've seen this watch before on WC. Not a fan of cartoon characters on watch dials, but I like Snoopy and this Seiko looks great. Here's some of my favorite Peanuts: Lucy being the 5c psychiatrist, Snoopy fighting the Red Baron in his flying doghouse, Linus quoting the Bible during the Christmas play, Charlie Brown and his kites, Peppermint Patty thinking Snoopy was a kid with a big nose, and almost anything Pigpen or Schroeder.
