Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

The Moonswatch release…slightly embarrassing - at least this is when got truly invested. I had a passing interest for a few years after noticing a Speedmaster for sale somewhere, though I cannot recall where this was.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

The first one I bought consciously was a Casio A158 which I still have to this day. If everybody in the world were completely rational that would be the best-selling watch.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Well…my 8F32-powered Seiko does but I’m not quite sure what it is. it turned up in my Great Uncle’s drawer one day only to not be touched for many years, yet it looks like it lived quite the life before it wound up there.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Your watch taste will change over time. Don’t expect to still like the same watches or even genre of watches you did when you first entered the space after a few years and clear out your collection when you need to. I think the best example of this is how my grail watch has changed since I began indulging in this hobby - it began as the Omega Speedmaster and is now a solid Gold Datejust. Another example (more realistic for my financial position) is my current fanaticism for Seiko. I’m sure when I first got into this hobby I didn’t even know who Seiko were and I now own three of them.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Seiko - of course. Also Grand Seiko. Rolex - This is mostly for their older watches however, like the aforementioned Datejust models. Newer Rolexes are great and all, but just too expensive for what they are. Longines - I don’t think the greater watch community has caught on to just how great their sports offerings are just yet. I came close to buying a Hydroconquest when I bought my Seiko 5 GMT, and they are incredibly solid watches with good finishing, a nice dial and high spec movements for their price segment. Casio - Casio’s new releases haven’t interested me so much lately but I have been thinking about picking up one of their more recent digital models. Omega - The brand that got me into watches, how couldn’t they? Tudor - The last 5 years or so of Tudor releases have Out-Rolex’d Rolex in terms of their original ethos.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

Rolex Datejust 36 18K Gold (any reference within reason), mostly due to an aesthetic itch it scratches that I can’t quite pinpoint. it just exudes class in a way I cannot describe in words or actions. Technically cheating to have two, but the Omega Speedmaster still charts here. As the watch that got me interested in watch collecting, it will forever hold a special place on my heart. Edited third option - Vacheron Overseas. The finishing is simply phenomenal, the design is supremely refined and well-executed and it isn’t as much of a hype monster as the AP Royal Oak, Patek Nautilus or even Rolex Oysterquartz (a watch I also love), which appeals to me.
