Let me introduce you to a trench watch. A trench watch is a converted pocket watch movement that was made into a wristwatch. By adding lugs to a pocket watch and including a strap, the pocket watch could be worn on the wrist and is far more user-friendly in the modern age. Initially developed for use during World War I soldiers didn’t have the time to access a watch that was in their pocket.
this particular trench watch is a particularly high-grade version. The watch is a Waltham Maximus, which is one of Waltham‘s highest grade movements. The case is made of solid 14 karat gold and was expertly crafted. The dial is consistent with a military trench watch, including the red 12. The strap is a new creation made by ManCave Leather in the classic style. @ManCaveLeather
So what do I love about this trench watch; the movement, the dial, the case, the strap. That’s right… Just about everything.
The only negative attributes I can really give this watch are due to the fact it’s an antique. Because it’s an antique the movement is far more fragile than a current production movement. That doesn’t mean you have to baby this watch. Obviously, watches like this made it through the World War. But, you do have to be a bit more careful and thus this isn’t the watch for daily wear. Also, due to the antique nature, the watch is smaller than typical modern tastes. This watch in total with case is about 34 mm across. That’s a pretty small watch. Adding the military style strap gives the watch a bit more heft and makes the watch far more wearable than the case proportions alone. All in all, I think the case matched with a strap makes it perfectly wearable on my 6 1/2 inch wrist. But, I do think larger wrists may find this watch a little dainty.

At that size did it start out as a women's pocket watch or just the smaller end of a men's watch.?

Probably a woman’s pendant watch for the 14k case. The original gold-filled case that houses the Maximus movement was a wristlet.
