I'm Tom. I'm an attorney based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Fairly new to this hobby, but I have a developing love for tool watches. I appreciate brands like Zodiac, Sinn, Hamilton, Serica and Lorier. I have a special love for German-made watches as my family is from there. IWC, Nomos, again Sinn, Junghans, Laco and Stowa were the watch brands that first interested me in watch collecting.
Through a friend who was looking to buy his first Seiko. The first brands that really grabbed me were all German: Stowa, Laco, Nomos and Sinn.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
Probably a Casio F91W, although I don't own it anymore. I bought a Daniel Wellington when I was 16, which I still have.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Buy what you love, not what's hyped.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Lorier, Serica, Studio Underd0g, Christopher Ward and Zodiac.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Sinn U50. I love everything about Sinn - the proportions, the unique design aesthetic, the German heritage factor, the quality of craftsmanship... just their whole ethos speaks to me. The U50 is well out of my price range for now, but I'd love to own one someday.
