I think eco-drive and other solar technologies have changed the frame considerably.
Also the Seiko Kinetic movements.
Now it is possible to have the accuracy of quartz without the battery change hassle.
I picked up a Swatch with the Autoquarz movement many years ago (it’s similar to the Kinetic - quartz powered by a rotor). Great watch but the style wasn’t much of a success for Swatch so they were discontinued. It is one of my more unusual watches.
Amazing history, incredibly hard-wearing and they look great. Plus, they are very inexpensive - and you won’t see many people wearing them.
Automatic, 200m water resistant, designed for military use , etc., etc.
I‘ve had mine since 2009 and it has taken some pretty severe treatment but just works. They often talk about “Beater Watches” - I think the Vostok Amphibia must be the ultimate beater.
