Thoughts on Frank Muller

I’ve always admired Frank Muller’s designs, with those rounded tonneau shaped cases, and the unique arabic numerals 👌🏻

A few years back they were hyped and traded in unreasonable prices for their basic eta based calibers.

Now your can get one below 3k usd. Seems a great price for a good condition FM.

What do your think crynchers?

Which one you’ll you go for?

I liked their tonneau designs from 25 years ago before they decided to go brash.

This is my 1996 Chronometro in 18K WG, with a silver guilloché dial and Belle Epoche/Art Nouveau numerals.

Gorgeous piece 👏🏻👏🏻 classic 👌🏻

What size is it?

This one will be way over the current purchase budget … looking more for a steel case piece.

I can’t remember the dimensions offhand, but it’s very wearable. Maybe 32mm across at the widest point and around 43mm top to bottom. Since it doesn’t have lugs that’s the full span.

There were steel versions of this one too if I recall. Some had Arabic numerals like this one, and some had Romans. There was also a beautiful version exactly as above in platinum with a salmon dial. Yes they’re expensive but because they’re out of fashion good examples can be had for a third or original RRP.

Very cool piece Adi! What size is it?

Had my eye on a similar one but with a steel case 😎 still not sure if I like the day or no date variant 🤷🏼‍♂️

I enjoyed Franck Muller for a while from afar and finally had the chance to try one on this year at Moyer in Indianapolis. I love the design and am unbothered by the ETA movements. On my wrist though, I found the lug to lug of most of the modern designs to be too large for me. Despite the curvex monicker, I also found the watches wore quite flat which, at least to me, added to the heft on wrist.

That said, I still think the brand is really cool, and the crazy hours complication is just amazing. One of those fun, snarky middle fingers in the industry that’s an incredible piece of engineering that pokes fun at the absurdity of our shared disease, er, hobby.

You can find various smaller size on the second hand- these are ever traded in a higher discount. If you like them take a look 👍🏻

In my mind it's vintage Richard Mille, in all ways but branding.

Interesting, I’ve herd Frank Mullers early success was an inspiration for RM.

But enjoying that design in under 3k is far from what you now expect from RM 🤣🤣

I think RMs will become as discounted as Franck Mullers though. RMs have a higher floor in terms of retail price, they don't have ETA versions after all, but some of the Vaucher equipped watches are not that fancy once you remove the branding... I can see this coming down to under 20,000€ 😉

I quite like both Richard Mille and Franck Muller, one of the two is priced in a region where I can understand if someone goes for it 😅 the other one might still get there.
