Actually, most of American watchmaking schools are tuition free. They are sponsored by the manufacturers because, just like with doctors, there is a shortage of watchmakers in US. I think there are like 20 - 30 new watchmakers a year and more are leaving the profession than are joining it. Also, if you need financial help, New York Horological Society gives out a scholarship or two for watchmaking students.
