Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

Got one of my fathers after his passing… then tried to learn about it. Many rabbit holes later I discovered I could collect what I like and then felt obligated to expand categories. Started with fields/military, then divers, explorer clones, the ‘space’ ones (Breitling, Omega, Fortis, Seiko), then filled out my1957 set of Omega’s(some deviation from the originals), fliegers, bauhaus, and my last one was the Omega Heritage 8912 Seamaster. I even found some like my father in laws 70’s Seamaster and similar. So 4 Seamaster and 2 Speedy’s. Think I have a story for each one, movie watches, square/reverso, solar and wear my Steve Rogers Auto Khaki as a regular daily. It is fun. And while not cheap (the hobby) anymore the hobby took me to the edge of self service. I’ve decided NOT to become a watchmaker, so minor stuff is ok, but I quite collecting tools and cleaning stuff and will just get them serviced if any need that sort of attention. Still the knowledge part, hunting for or reading about new stuff is interesting and I’m now better able to diversify and keep the pieces with real attraction. Next phase will be consolidation, but the market is soft so I’m in no hurry…. I avoid ‘bling’, Tudor over Rolex, drawn to tool watches and expensive to service items, though I made some exceptions. Haven’t figured out watchcrunch just yet, but I’ll keep plugging away…

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Probably a Casio as a kid/teen, some novelty I got from my wife (MickeyMouse) and store my kids Pokémon ones…

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Really, all of them from my Everest Smiths Deluxe to my Avengers Hamilton. My Fortis model did the longest mission in space by a single guy.. my Breitling was the first to Orbit the earth (by an American) and my Vostock is like Steve Zissou’s… and I’ve met total strangers who’ve asked about a watch on the wrist.. they’re all interesting

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Go slow, do research, never spend more than you can lose and wear them unless you’re setting up a museum! Also find trusted sources … they give great advice

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Omega, Tudor, Jack Mason, Lorier… just got off a Panerai journey and ended up with the one I wanted

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

Short list Universal Geneve White Shadow Omega Constellation/Globemaster Panerai Radiomir Mostly the design…..someday a Patek?
