“NOS” ?

I found this watch, pulled the trigger and now I am having second thoughts.

It is described as a NOS. New Old Stock. It was manufactured in the 1970s, never used, never worn. It runs fine but I am advised to service it. The seller cannot tell which caliber is in it. Strange, isn’t it?

Have you ever bought such watches?

Did it come with the original box & papers ?

I wouldn't trust a 50 year old watch that has never been used and I would be wary of the runs fine claim.

50 years ago, the lubricants were not the same as today. If it was truly NOS & not been running for 50 years, then all the oils will have likely dried up.

A service should definitely be done.

And the seller may be the 2nd or third owner of the watch, but maybe inherited it as NOS.

That all said, if you're having reservations, maybe you should cancel the sale if possible.

Great looking watch. I assume it was a good price? Service it wear it enjoy it. Just don't try and sell it. 😁

NOS from the 70s will need a service. It wasn't lubricated with synthetic oils and they've broken down.

Service it, wear it, or don't, and go about your life without worry.

If you're going to buy NOS from the 70s, know what you're getting into.

That said, there's tons of great watches from the past. They tend, for theist part, to be pretty inexpensive. But don't forget the servicing costs when you buy.

I ordered the watch from Chrono24 and didn’t receive it yet. The description shows no box, no original paper. No strap neither. 90€ shipping included, mechanical watch, a seller located in Switzerland: I might have lost my common sense.

90€ inc shipping. At least I didn’t break the piggy bank.

Thanks for your perspective. I will give it a shot and have it serviced. This cheap purchase (90€) will get more pricey. Call it a learning experience!

Assuming it just needs a service (£50ish) that's a very nice watch for under €200. 👍

Does a service really cost 50£ where you live? Here in Austria, 300€ seems to be the lowest price.

I have a little independent watchmaker who has serviced a number of my watches charges £50 for a simple service on my vintage watches. If anything needs replacing (often does) the price will go up but even then I've not had anything cost more than £100.
