Tissot Luxury Powermatic 80

My first dress watch.

I was drawn in by its looks and all the hype that surrounded the Powermatic 80 movement at the time. Oh, and the sizable discount.

I still love it, but this one is a lesson in not delving too deeply into the technical specs of a watch after you have bought it.

The base Powermatic 80 movement has a lot going for it. Just don’t mention the ‘high tech’ escapement..

High tech escapement

Same escapement literally the whole industry is using. Standard Swiss lever escapement.

Sorry couldn't resist! I wouldn't concern yourself too much about the plastic parts. These movements are still serviceable & I believe you could have the escapement swapped out for a normal one if you wanted to

The point is in the 23 jewel Powermatic 80 used by Tissot the escapement is made of plastic

Do watches with these escapements not tell the time?

It tells the time very well actually. I would just prefer it did it in a less deceiving manner.

She: "Baby, tell me something dirty..."

Me: "C07.111"

😀

But seriously, we really don't know how this movement performs long-term. It may just work in your favor.

The time it breaks, your warranty will be long dead. If I am not mistaken, plastic part is use in date mechanism.

Obviously they do, but they aren't your typical Swiss lever escapement & some people have concerns regarding their longevity, or see them as disposable.

And the evidence that “some people” have to support this view?

·

I don't know what evidence they have, all I'm saying is that they have concerns. There are several posts on WatchCrunch about it. There is at least one watchmaker on YouTube though who has strong opinions on the High Tech Escapement

It was this YouTube video that showed me what was really going on.

It’s a shame because other areas of the watch are really nice. But whenever I wear it, that all disappears. All I can think about it that plastic escapement.

Ignorance is bliss people..

I'd try to not to let it spoil your enjoyment though. You got a good discount by the sounds of it
