The ultimate low key travel watch, the Casio F-91W! 🇵🇪

I’ve been traveling around Peru for the last two weeks and am currently in the dessert beach town Mancora. It’s sort of a semi dangerous place for tourists to get robbed if they’re not careful. So I’ve tucked away my other watches and chosen this as my daily tool for surfing, the beach, and many other adventures! It has served me well and I never worry about it attracting attention for theft. If anything I’ll just get robbed because I’m a gringo but not because of my watch 😉I don’t even like to be wearing a $100 G-Shock in areas like this as those are very popular in South America and perceived as more expensive then how we view there “low cost” compared to Swiss made watches.

This photo was taken at my hostel in Mancora.

What is your go to travel watch for areas where you need to be cautious?

I wouldn't wear anything, I mean most of mine would be attractive to people and you would have to be crazy to wear them in dangerous places, inside a hotel or such I would feel a bit more at ease - in v dangerous cities it's possible to get killed over such items.

I don't go to dangerous areas in the first place. But I'm interested in what others have to say. Probably a lot of Casio/Timex wearing as you have smartly done.

Wore this guy to Turks & Caicos. I leave the nicer peices at home when traveling out of the country. You have the right idea.

You know at first I used to agree with what you said, better not to wear any watch. But when you’re in an area that you can’t be taking your smartphone out, it’s better to have a cheap watch to check the time with at a glance. Or when you’re out for awhile doing an activity like surfing and don’t have your phone, you need the time. And after traveling in South/Central America a lot I realized in poor areas I still see people wearing the Casio f91w everywhere. As a gringo in these areas, I’m at risk no matter what and having a similar watch to everyone else is not going to put me at more risk. I solo travel a lot and I have never been robbed. I just don’t put myself in dumb situations and I think it also matters what you’re wearing and how confident you act. Being dressed down helps a lot. Ultimately I don’t think someone would be targeting me for a $12 Casio that’s readily available at their local second hand flee market for a few dollars. If anything, they’d be hoping I had a smartphone or wallet in my pockets just because I’m a foreigner.

To quote watches of espionage “I’d rather tell stories to my grandkids about my watch that got robbed rather than how it sat in a safe or at home”. 😅

A Casio?!? I’d only use a Skmei! 😆Kidding!

You’ve made the right choice! The F91W is the perfect travel watch. It’s cheap, it’s light and comfortable, it keeps time well and has water resistance. Plus it scars easily and you can pick up battle wounds from the trip that will add character to the watch.

I’m at the age where I don’t go anywhere dangerous on vacations, so my go to travel watch is my Apple Watch. 😅

Haha yes the Casio f-91w looks especially cheap once it gets some scratches!

Ahhh the romance of travel and watches… how could we not travel with at least one watch?!

Theft is really getting out of hand, just a few weeks ago someone stole my fathers daytona, fortunately he is ok, but gosh! I found a platform that was made to report stolen watches, it’s called JoinTrack.org I hope this helps a bit.
