My watch journey began when I was 12 years old and my dad gave me a Timex for Christmas. At the time, I was not very thrilled and I showed it. However, now that my old man has passed on, I recognize that he was telling me that I was man enough for an adult's gift. Memories of my father led me to research watch making. I had no idea about the history and the craftsmanship behind well-made watches! Older and wiser now, I'm a new watch enthusiast who likes to dream about owning the holy trinity, but I focus on watches that are less mainstream. I especially like American watchmakers like RGM and Weiss. I'm into supporting up-and-coming watchmakers because one can get a really cool watch at a decent price.
Without watch reviews, all we'd have are slick marketing campaigns to tell us the best and worst of the watches on which we spend our hard-earned money. However, I sometimes wonder if popular watch reviewers are in the pocket of watch makers. I especially distrust feedback from anybody who gives glowing reviews of every watch listed on their website.
Since your wife is just getting her feet wet, how about a starter watch? I gave a female friend a rose gold G-Shock a few years back and she loved it. This gave her a chance to realize she liked watches and she took her time to research her first luxury watch, which was a Cartier Tank. Diving into an expensive watch that she may not like is risky.

Rolex pulled it off quite nicely with Tudor.
