17 Jewel Series From Timex

US Time \ Timex is generally known for it's innovative pin level non-jeweled watch movements. But, did you know they did indeed have a series of 17 jewels movement? In 1960 they launched the "400" series for men. The watches were produced between Timex, Laco and Hatori. Pictured are my personal collection I have found over the past 7 years. The true jewel among them is the one in the original presentation case. Unfortunately the production run only lasted for two years. By 1961 Timex designed a new movement of its own design, the "21" Jewels. Have a look at the lower row. With the exception that one dial has "21" and the other "400", they have the same design. In fact the 21 series used the same case and case back as the 400 for the first two years (1961 - 1962). You may often find a 21 with a 400 case back.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the history. That’s what makes this hobby so cool.

How rare are these jeweled movement 21's or 400's?

rare is a difficult word to apply but, since the 400 series was only produced for two years there are certainly less of them. The 21 ran for well over 12 years or more so lots them out there.
