☢ 60s Gigandet with Radium Dial

A new flea market find from last weekend. This is the first time I've seen the "RA Swiss Made RA" on a dial.

Wow...I've seen dials with T Swiss Made T but never one the RA designation. It looks mint too. Is it still radioactive? I admit I forgot radium's half-life.

I’ve owned a few, but question here (genuine, not a d*ckh**d question) what part of that dial would have the radium as there looks to be little in the way of lume? Is the inner track painted?

I asked myself the same question and I can't answer it for you 😄 I illuminated the dial and in the absolute darkness you can't see a bit of glow.

Hmm… there are a number of conclusions that could be drawn, but it is very nice. Particularly fond of the caseback.

Do you think it could be that the radium spots on the ring were removed and replaced with the black lines? I think the indices would still be the original ones. Yes, I really like the case back too 👍

Radium's half life is 1600 years, so if you have a watch manufactured with Radium, it's still essentially just as radioactive (and dangerous) as it was when it was new. I would recommend avoiding radium dials whenever possible -- we all get enough radiation nowadays without voluntarily adding to it.

The lume plots on that particular dial look like they've been removed.

If i remeber right the half life is about 1,600 years. The other componds in the radium paint break down first and that can reduce or stop the glow. The trouble with Radium lume is it can crumple up and release radon gas.

Thank you, and now I'm scared of the big bad radium.

Lol I just mention to say its somthing to think about radon is the second lesding cause of lung cancer.

I was reading about a recent study that was saying the gas building up over years under a cystal and then there’s a crack or a leaking gasket and the built up radon is inhaled indoors or if you had a watch box full for years and and opened it indoors.

Yes, I completely agree with you, this watch was in a bulk that I bought and surprised me. But I almost thought that the radium had been removed because I didn't understand where the radium should have been.
