You were told wrong. You need a spring bar tool. But you can remove that strap. If you don't feel comfortable doing so, see a Jeweler. It is simple enough to do unless the spring bars have rusted springs or dirt build up over the years.

It's hard to tell, but I'm certain that there are old-style thick spring bars there. Again, it's difficult to tell from this angle, but try and get in there with a spring bar tool from the bottom and see if something budges.

I have resorted to wire cutters on particularly stuck spring bars.
Can you post more photos, a close up of the bars from the top and from the back pls
By all means, remove that spring loaded adapter. I’d be very surprised if it hasn’t already started to cut grooves on the inside edges of the lugs.
