Review: Tissot Sideral S - A Retro-Inspired Masterpiece with Modern Innovations

I am a sucker for watches with a rich heritage and a cool history to tell others (that would listen).

When the original (vintage) fiberglass Tissot Sideral S was released in 1971, I was just a twinkle in my dad’s eye.

Vintage-inspired watches continue to capture the hearts of watch enthusiasts, and the Tissot Sideral S pays homage to the brand's iconic timepiece from the 1970s. Combining retro aesthetics with modern materials and mechanics, the Sideral S offers a vibrant and fashionable experience. In this comprehensive review, we will explore the captivating history, design, materials, and performance of the Tissot Sideral S, establishing its status as a must-have summer watch.

A Tribute to the Original:

The Tissot Sideral S is a worthy successor to the original Sideral from the late 1960s/early 1970s, which was renowned for its groundbreaking use of fiberglass in watchmaking. The modern interpretation of the Sideral S features a barrel-shaped case made of forged carbon fibre, replacing the fiberglass of its predecessor. This lightweight yet robust material ensures durability and adds a contemporary touch to the watch.

Wrist-shot: Original vs Modern Sideral S

Design & Construction:

The Tissot Sideral S boasts a 41mm forged carbon fibre case, offering a perfect balance between wearability and presence on the wrist. With a water resistance of up to 300 metres (30 bar), it is well-suited for various water-related activities during the summer. The PVD-treated steel unidirectional bezel with a luminous diving scale adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The sapphire crystals on the front and back of the watch provide excellent clarity and protection.

Dial & Hands:

The Sideral S features a predominantly black dial, accentuated by a coloured minute track in blue, yellow, or red, depending on the variant. The regatta countdown section between 12 and 2 o'clock, marked in green and red, adds a unique touch reminiscent of the original design. The hour and minute hands, coated with Super-LumiNova, ensure optimal legibility in any lighting conditions. The red T-shaped seconds hand adds a subtle pop of colour and enhances the watch's overall charm.

Movement & Performance:

Inside the Tissot Sideral S beats the Powermatic 80 automatic movement, a reliable and accurate caliber developed by the Swatch Group's ETA. With its Nivachron balance spring, the movement offers excellent antimagnetic properties, ensuring precision and durability. The Powermatic 80 provides an impressive power reserve of at least 80 hours, reducing the need for frequent winding and enhancing the watch's practicality.

Rubber Strap & Fastening System:

The Sideral S comes with a perforated rubber strap, reminiscent of the original design from the 1970s. Tissot has implemented an innovative fastening system, allowing for easy and secure strap attachment. The absence of a traditional buckle and the use of one continuous piece of rubber contribute to the watch's comfort and aesthetic appeal. The watch is also compatible with additional coloured rubber straps (I absolutely will be getting the black one!), enabling wearers to customize their style according to preference.

Price & Availability:

Tissot continues its tradition of offering solid and accessible timepieces with the Sideral S, priced at AU$1,550. The watch is available through authorized dealers (or Tissot’s online store), making it an attractive option for watch enthusiasts seeking a versatile and distinctive timepiece for the summer season.

Conclusion:

The Tissot Sideral S encapsulates the essence of retro-inspired design while embracing modern innovations in watchmaking. With its forged carbon fibre case, vibrant dial variations, advanced Powermatic 80 movement, and comfortable rubber strap, this timepiece strikes the perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary style. Whether you are a vintage aficionado or someone in search of a unique and reliable summer watch, the Tissot Sideral S offers an enticing proposition.

Lovely review. I’m seriously considering getting a Sideral. I’ve always wanted a regatta timer and only discovered the Sideral this morning.

Great review! I just ordered mine last night, such a fun summer watch! I like the yellow and that it was the original color, however I decided to go for the blue because I don’t wear any yellow. Very excited to get it in soon!
