Please indulge me. I like reviews, I almost never buy anything without checking reviews. I became addicted to YouTube watch reviews and some reviewers (watching Max got me here), I try to make sure the reviews and reviewers are creditable and pure of motive. Which has lead me to this review. I don’t have the equipment to do the high production value reviews like we can find on YouTube but I can still share what I feel is a well thought out opinion. So here’s my second watch review with maybe more to follow. (That’s up to you all.)
When my watch hobby got turned on a couple years back and I started to do some watch reading and being a child of the space race, watching the landing real-time in black and white, I naturally gravitated towards a true grail watch, the Omega Speedmaster Pro. I had to have one. The newest version, 310.30.42.50.01.002, had just been released but the box wasn’t as cool and the price went up and I still really didn’t know that much about bracelets and straps and sapphire or Hesalite or Co-axial calibers or even display backs, so set out to find the previous generation, 311.30.42.30.01.005. There were a few left so jumped.
When I got the watch in my hands I wasn’t and still aren’t disappointed. It is clearly well made, solid at ~156 grams with the SS bracelet, I’m okay with a little weight on my wrist for $5k+ I want to feel like I’ve paid for something. 42mm wide and 13.8 thick so it’s not a small watch, this you should consider before buying. With the nicely curved lugs you will find it does wear smaller. A 20mm lug width along with the combination of a multi-faceted polished case and black dial make this thing a real strap monster and it comes with 2 additional straps. (See my other postes). It isn’t automatic but I don’t wear it every day anyway so a little winding isn’t an issue for me. The new Co-axial movement is better but is that an issue?
I feel this is a must have watch, at least for me. There are other Speedmasters, too many. Also homages, knock-offs and the Moonswatch but when I wear this I feel like I’m wearing a real piece of history. And I do know the real story about it being left in the capsule because the digital clock in the orbiter broke, but isn’t that impressive and doesn’t that make the NASA certification real?
I’ve worn watches my whole life with some Rolexs bought 40 years ago when an average employed guy could afford them and Seikos a Timex or two long gone. Nothing special until I recently got a little m...
