80’s Vinatge is still around us

On one of my recent trips to “La Costa Brava” (coastal region of Catalonia-Spain, where I’m from), I spotted this 80’s vintage Braun Alarm Clock (ref. 4749 AB 4) sitting around my parents bedroom.

Truth being said, we’ve spent countless summers at our beach house. It’s a beautiful location where you can enjoy turquoise water, good food, company, and countless hours reading.

Yet, I had never payed attention to this beautiful bauhaus styled alarm clock. It’d been broken for years collecting dust.

Nonetheless, as we were bound to return to Barcelona, I told my girlfriend id snatch it and bring it back home. A couple days ago, I was able to finally fix it (had some issues with the sound system), and this morning I woke up to its magnificent annoying sound.

It’s the pinnacle of Germany beauty, simplicity, and functionality. Doesn’t get more Braun than that 🤣

Overall, I just found it interesting how our perceptions and interests shape the way we view the world that surrounds us. A couple years ago, this alarm clock would have had no significance to me. Yet, after developing a passion and geeking out on vintage stuff, I fell head over heels for it.

Cheers, GCC

Cool! Great that you tried and successfully fixed it. Quite iconic, at least in Europe. I always loved that design and I have a radiocontrolled Braun wall clock myself. Which somehow lasts forever (years) on a single battery... And apparently according to Ben's latest scratch video their ceramic watches are also worth a look

My parents had one of those too. I've no idea what happened to it unfortunately. Co-incidentally, I'm just back from a week in Roses on the Costa Brava.

Jesus. I hope things from the 80s are still around (looking in the mirror). Thanks for the vintage reference kid

Braun items were so respected until they were produced in other countries, with qc problems. I owned at least 2 or 3 of those iconic travel alarm clocks from W Germany until a contractor working on my bedroom knocked one over breaking the plastic case. I finally abandoned Braun products when a steam iron manufactured in Mexico for the company malfunctioned was not safe to use even after repair under warranty. There were a few decent coffee makers and grinders that remind me of our first years after marriage when my wife and I needed everything to set up a proper home.

I owned one of these as a teenager.

Thanks for reminding me how old I am.

Hey Timothy! I’m aware, but this particular reference is from thr 80’s. Gotta say though, the new pieces are not for me! Do you own any?

Wasn’t my intention! 🤣 Do you own any of the new watches by any chance? I’ve been looking to see if there are any cool models, but I just don’t seem to find the right one!

We went to Girona for a new windscreen. It's a long story but that's why we were in the Costa Blanca. Later this week we're off to Andalusia for Christmas. We have an apartment there.
