Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

My wife and I collected space exploration memorabilia so in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing she gifted me an Omega Speedmaster. That watch sparked a deep dive into the watch enthusiast community which was then accelerated by the health related lockdown.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Before I "knew" about watches a fairly rare model quartz Bulova Marine Star with 660 feet WR faithfully served me throughout the South Pacific in the 80's on many dive, snorkel and travel adventures. My first collectible watch was a Speedmaster my wife gifted me in 2019 and it was the catalyst for my current interest in collecting.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

I bought a rose gold Laykin et Cie (Hollywood jeweler to the stars) for my wife that was a gift from Jack Benny and his wife Mary to their daughter Joan. The movement for that watch (and many others) was provided by a survivor of the Titanic who was returning from Switzerland after negotiating deals that resulted in him providing movements to several high end American retailers.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Avoid watches, especially impulse purchases, that conflict with your budget and lifestyle.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I frequently keep any eye out for vintage Seiko, Felca and Titoni watches though I started out collecting more of the premium marquee brands.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

I'm currently considering a blue dial Bulgari Octo Finissimo. The unique case design, super thin engineering, exquisite beveled bracelet and rarity even amongst enthusiasts has captivated my interest for the past year or so.
