Karma?

It is impossible to know in advance what will happen and how it will happen, but this does not mean that everything can only be random. Sometimes there is a deeper movement that goes beyond luck and chance.

For example, I recently started developing my own watch brand. I chose the name Elka Watch Co. which is sort of my nickname, and I later realised that this brand existed in the 1960s.

I worked on designing a logo that would fit my vision of positioning the brand in the 1960's when the old brand died out, without taking inspiration from logos I found in the archives that had absolutely nothing to do with the old one. This weekend a friend sent me a photo of an old ELKA from the 1950s and, to my surprise, I discovered that the logo on this watch was almost identical to my design.

This could be considered a mere coincidence, but I think it is more than a coincidence!

This will sound strange, but maybe in a past life you were the founder of Elka and now the universe wants you to continue and subconsciously avoid this brand to evaporate again 🤷‍♂😀

Who knows

So you are not in any way related to the old brand? I assumed you were because the brand logo on your rotors was similar.

ELKA Watch Co. of 2022 has no connection with the defunct Amsterdam brand.  We just wanted to pay a tribute to the old Dutch brand with our first 2 models.

About the Defunct brand:

Founded in 1877 in Amsterdam by Eliazer Kiek, inventor of the tactile watch for the blind and watchmaker to Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. In 1949, the Elka Watch opened its Swiss branch in La Chaux-de-Fonds (it produced wristwatches of course but also pocket watches, braille watches, chronographs, chess and signal clocks). Then, in the mid-1970s, the brand disappeared along with Ernst Louis Kiek, grandson and last heir.

So this is a grey area - appreciate (and aware) the brand is defunct but when you produce watches with Elka Watch Co. on the dial one would assume two things: you are related (a la Vertex who are still owned by the family albeit a few generations down), or the name/trademark has been resurrected via purchase or otherwise (a la everyone else). Does the trademark become available to re-trademark after a certain amount of time? I’m unfamiliar with Dutch trade laws.

This post is baffling me no end. You were either aware or not, the logo is not a coincidence.
