I decided recently that I would like to have a watch that I enjoy looking at, rather than just a tool on my arm. I'm not sure yet how I feel about spending money for this purpose, so I didn't want to go too crazy. That said, if I didn't spend "enough" I wouldn't really get an answer to that question, so I gave myself a $1000 price target. My initial criteria is simple. I want a time piece that draws me in visually and can invoke emotion. After looking across dozens of brands I was drawn more and more to the Japanese makers, and to my surprise I ended up selecting a Casio Oceanus Manta (OCW-S5000E-1AJF) as my first nice watch. It should be quite a change from the $30 Timex Ironman that I have traditionally purchased purely for its utility.
