Luminox: Testing Begins

The nature of my work embodies everything this company claims to be aimed at. Maritime operations are harsh, and equipment requires special considerations to perform at a high level with high trust/low failure expectations.

I usually wear a Garmin, which has more than lived up to expectations. Its bulletproof and more importantly, excellent at resisting the ocean’s persistent desire to consume everything it touches through oxidation. The drawback is the need to charge.

Luminox wasn’t the first option pitched. Plenty of options out there are up to the task. Notably, Sangin Instruments and other heavy duty tool watches.

I like the look of Luminox, and intend to pull zero punches to protect this watch in my work environment. So far, I LOVE the design, the feel, and the tritium functionality.

Let’s see if it can handle the abuse.

I would love to hear your experiences with this watch over time. Keep us updated. BTW, good looking watch.

Before you upload that pic of escorting a military ship, make sure to click “no location” on the photo before upload. Wouldn’t want to compromise the location of that military escort. God Speed

I test drive a Commando Raider CARBONOX in Costa Rica late last year… you’ll be fine. Although I don’t think it’s good value for money it will survive.

The photo is about 5yrs old. OpSec is not at risk here, but good looking out.

Right on! I wore this one for almost 20 years straight, including 4 years in fire & rescue. Aside from seasonal ocean lifeguarding, we had a surf rescue team that would respond within our entire county. It's been on multiple rescues and fires.

I know they've had a lot of warranty claims lately for water resistance failures, but this one served me for a long time.

Hell yeah! That’s great to hear! Sounds like you put it through its paces, but looks like it was up to the tasks! Thanks for sharing.

I saw the class action suit behind that but it looked like an isolated incident because the class seemed to be pretty small and the settlement was pretty small for a large company (something in the neighborhood of $200k). I think a lot of companies deal with things like that.

Excited to put mine to work!

I’ve been tempted by Luminox but not bit yet. Right now I like a Ti diver. And also use a Garmin when wanting GPS/speed and distance info.

And like you, If I’m off grid, the charging aspect makes the Garmin a pain.

Ocean exposure is constant in a kayak or windsurfer and the Seiko 2.5mm spring bars (fat bars) give me confidence when watch takes a hit and it’s over water. And no need for tritium, a good Seiko has all night lume no problem
