Today was great.
Working on a building site, pissing rain, cold and dull, a chap came to retrieve some tools from the crib. Had a blether to pass some time…then he said “you’re a brave man wearing a Seamaster professional on site” …immediately I knew we had a nerd on our hands. He’d even noticed the “ghosted” bezel by a mere glimpse from under my shoddy old coat.
This resulted in a fine discussion of watches (omegas and San Martins) which we both own.
Mentioning someone’s timepiece should happen more often. Don’t be afraid!

Amen! I commented on my client’s Black Bay and now we wrist check each other every time we meet.
Our salesman we are working with had a Seiko, but one time he came with an Omega Speedmaster under his cuff. I noticed it in a glance, and asked: you changed your Seiko SBP143 to a Speedy? In a second we became watch nerd friends from business partners. It's worth a shot indeed!
A few months ago, at the grocery store, I noticed an older man (80s perhaps) with a pretty vintage looking Rolex GMT Master on his wrist. Lots of dings and scratches, faded bezel…years of hard wear. I walked by him and said “love your GMT Master”.
He looked at me shocked and muttered “thanks”, as he quickly scurried away, as if I was about to mug him.
Not everyone wants to be noticed haha 😁
