Beat Error +/- Manual v Automatic

Hello Crunchers,

I have a few questions:

Are manual movements more accurate?

If you remove the winding rotor/automatic winding works, does that impact the beat error?

What do you prefer daily?

Thanks all,

I'd guess automatics are marginally more accurate if you're actually wearing them, because they can keep themselves near full wind where main spring torque is more consistent. Off the wrist, I'm not sure there'd be a difference. Just my guess, anyway.

It impacts the amplitude. Which in turn would affect the accuracy.

Depends on the watch and the movement. Your watch can be precise both manual or automatic but then get effected by magnetism from daily life use. I find the main difference between automatic and manual is the case thickness. Usually automatics are thicker because the movement is generally thicker from the extra function.

I’ve always preferred automatic. Don’t like manually winding. Even better: quartz 🤯

The beat error is not impacted by how the mainspring is being wound. It is a measure of how well the balance wheel is aligned with the pallet fork. The main advantage of handwound movements is that they are usually thinner, and also that a rotor doesn't obscure a decorated movement.
