The principle of cosmic balance

Everything in my life is maintained in a balance as for every action there is a reaction, and the gods are capricious and quickly angered.

With this principle in mind, the choice of the GM-S5600 was not only natural but necessary to balance wearing the MSAR yesterday. The analog mechanical movement of the MSAR will be countered with digital, and the everlasting tritium illumination will be opposed by eternal darkness.

And there are very few watches that can embrace the concept of darkness better than the GM-S5600. Its negative display is an engineering marvel that manages to remain murky and dark under all lights conditions and viewing angles. It’s so bad that even the EL back-light is struggling to make it legible. The GM-S5600 went beyond simply embracing darkness to become its avatar.

I had to spend a lot of time contorting myself and playing with the polarizing filter on my camera to get a few legible shots. Taking photos of this screen is even worse than trying to read it.

But at least I went there prepared with a good good cup of coffee and a decently sized butter croissant.

It’s still a cool watch because when compared to a standard square, the reduced size and its shinny metal shell are making it look like a dress watch version of a DW-5600E - which is exactly what the GM-S5600 is. The JaysAndKays adapters will even allow me to fit a fancier 20mm strap, but for now I’m happy with the black FKM tropic.

It’s still very much a G-Shock with all the characteristics for ruggedness that G-Shock are famous for. It’s just not a G-Shock that can be used to tell the time at a glance.
