The once and future square

Wearing the DW-5600E is like returning to the original starting point, or at least this is what it feels like for me. I never wore its ancestor, the DW-5000C, because I was busy getting used to civilian life again, and by the time I needed it once more my eyes had caught the first ana-digi G-Shock, and the original square slipped from my mind.

But it didn't completely disappeared, because the DW-5600E came into my life when I ditched the smartwatch, and it became the first "normal" watch that I wore when I decided to de-toxify my wrist.

Many other watches were bought since, and some of them are other variations on the square theme, including the GW-M5610U which is, in my opinion, the quintessential square that fixed all the issues I had with the 5600 while retaining everything that makes a square G-Shock, well - a true square G-Shock.

But I never stopped wearing the DW-5600E, I still wore it when the GW-M5610U was tempting me and even the unpleasant plastic strap was not enough to make me desert it. On the contrary, this just provided the incentive to buy one of the purpose made straps from Vario, which I have to admit do requires a commitment to the G-Shock ethos since they are not exactly cheap. They are a perfect fit however and a welcome alternative to the rather dreadful standard plastic strap.

Which reminds me that some of the close up shots here were taken with the newer Canon RP and its 85mm macro lens. It's a beast to hold and too heavy to use for casual shots, but it can zoom in to reveal a crazy amount of details.

The wrist and table shots however were taken with the older Canon G12 because of its smaller size and lighter weight which enables me to hold and shoot it with one hand. It's still a good camera but my growing familiarity with the RP means that I'll be using it less.
