End of the year with a Vostok
This Vostok symbolize for me the end of an era. I grew up under the threat of mutual annihilations' by nuclear weaponry, a world that was divided along geo-political borders that were more often than not mined and ranged by artillery instead of open to trade and tourism. A world where the question was not IF but WHEN.
Being able to buy and wear a watch that is a direct descendant from this era symbolized for me that this world was gone for good. This year I found myself thinking twice every time I wanted to strap one of my Vostoks on my wrist because this icon of a bad time bygone started to mean something completely different for many people.
I'm looking at the blue dial with the funny dude. The same dial with the non functional lume and basic date window, this dial that is accented with the colorful Pepsi bezel and the bi-colored strap. It should be a fun watch to wear, a well meant joke homaging Arnold stating that in Russia...
But no. It doesn't and the jokes are not funny anymore. I wear it today because I feel that in less than a year the world has changed and I'm not sure if those that were born and grew up after 1991 can even understand what is happening. I wear it to say goodbye to 2022 in the naïve hope that 2023 will be better.
Like many others, I'll be going out to celebrate the new year this evening. I'm not sure that I'll wear the 420 Amfibia for the occasion. In fact, I'm not sure when will be the next time that I'll wear it.
I'm a big fan of watches that are interesting because they are either unique, have interesting features, well designed or simply offer a great value for their price.
