A long time ago my friend I was considering something similar,I like vintage rolex now probably more than when I was considering buying one, nothing wrong with 34mm size but if like me you wanted a new date just, I'd say save for pre owned or just do better and get a San Martin really nice,if I'm wrong apologies and hope you make the right decision and love your piece 👍
Service costs for the vintage Rolex world be eye watering I'd imagine. It'd be less robust than the Royal. Smaller sizes are coming back into fashion, but 34mm is very small , especially on your large wrist.
Would you be interested if it didn't say Rolex on the dial? It's "cheap" for a reason..
I was born in 1970, so faced a similar dilemma. I decided not to go for an old impractical watch & went for a modern reissue (Seiko Willard).
That's just my thoughts. Good luck & look forward to seeing your wrist shots 👍🏻👍🏻
Im a big fan of both birth year watches (or any significant year) as well as rocking “undersized” watches. I think on many wrists, including my 6.5, 34 is plenty big and looks great.

Easy choice, the newer watch.
