Vostok Amphibia 710059 review

Finally I get my hand on a Vostok Amphibia. It’s hard to get one in my country, luckily I got my hands on a used one.

Been eyeing an amphibia for quite some time. Looking at a Vostok is like having a classic motorcycle. You know it’s not the most sophisticated. The mechanic is out of date, with no quick date set. The bracelet are cheap and low quality. But the engineering of the watch is somehow ingenious, with the back clasp getting tighter the deeper you dive.

The crown is like handling a kickstart on an old bike. There are certain angle and how you pull the crown to operate it. It all feel so manual and lo tech, but I can’t help but fall for those charms. It’s like having a vintage mechanical thing on your wrist. (Which kind of is)

Some people also complaint about the acrylic glass being easily scratch. I found it to be the perfect pairing for the mechanic and design of it, period correct.

But the best thing about this watch for me is the look. One of the coolest dial design, in a comfortable cushion case. I even love the bezel design, with overall looks kinda have a constructivisme aesthetics. Suits the Russian vintage design.

The time keeping also surprisingly good. Even better than some my Seiko 5’s. Maybe I’m just lucky, since I also read about some people complaining about the accuracy.

Maybe I’m biased but I really like this watch. Maybe because I also uses an old motorcycle for my daily transport. Kinda make sense to have an “old” watch on my wrist.

I eventually doing some modding to the watch. Changing the bracelet to a strap, and brushing the bezel and the case. From blingy polished looks, changed it into a brushed steel. I prefer this looks, make it more like a vintage military tool watch.

So there it is, my biased review of the Vostok Amphibia. Maybe some people are right, it’s like joining a cult. You can’t explain it with logic…

A fine choice.

Mine came out of the box at +5spd so I have not opened it yet.

I picked the 710059 because everything about it is so identifiably Vostok. They do things their own way.

The factory bracelet went back into the box soon after unboxing. With the huge variety of 22mm options available there is little need to put up the standard cringy bracelet, although that dial colour is a bit tricky find a matching leather strap.

This canvas and leather strap will do for now:

Nice! Surprisingly the accuracy is not bad at all, right? Or maybe we’re just the lucky ones 😜

Agree on the 710059 case and dial design being unmistakeably Vostok. Browse YouTube for some modding videos of Vostok, maybe you’ll find inspiration for your next mod. I went with the brushing mod to lose the glossy looks, made it more like a vintage military tool watch. With only a scotchbrite and some tapes!

We might have got lucky. My 650539 GMT was +22spd out of the box, now fixed.
