Seiko Prospex SPB153J1 “Captain Willard” review

Is it too soon to review this watch after having it for two days? Who cares, I’m just too excited about this watch!
Another mini grail for my movies related watches collection, the Seiko Willard got it’s nickname thanks to the protagonist Captain Willard from the movie “Apocalypse Now” whose wearing it. Although it’s not the original 6105 from the 70’s, this is the closest thing I could get my hands on.

A modern reinterpretation of the 6105, with smaller dimension than the original, using the 6r35 movement with 70 hours power reserve and a sapphire crystal. With the smaller dimension, also come the most comfortable 20mm lug size. Making these watch unbelievably comfortable on the wrist. I previously owned a king turtle that I feel rather big and heavy on my wrist. I sold it to get this Willard, and immediately I felt the difference. The cushion case is such a wrist hugger without the extra weight.

I got the olive green one with rubber strap since I think it resemblances the military mood of the Willard character. I think Seiko did a great job with the color scheme on this one. The green is something you have to see for yourself. On the bezel and on the dial, it’s such a unique kind of green that changes color depends on the lighting. I love the vintage looking hands and indices. The hand are also cool, using both brushed and polished finishing to make it more dimensional. And the rubber strap is also very comfortable, I don’t understand some of the bad reviews about it. It’s so soft and flexible, yet the quality is more than decent that you know it wouldn’t break…yet.

With all these features, did it justifies the price point? I think it’s relative. If it was a Swiss watch, people would say that it’s a steal. Yet, if Seiko can tweak the price point lower, they’d have a best seller in their hand with this one. Luckily I got a used one in mint condition with price far below the retail price. So it’s a no brainer for me.
All things aside, this is one of the best Seiko I’ve ever wear, and I think it’s going to have a lot of wrist time.
