Q: How did you get into watch collecting?
My dad was a Seiko fan, a proud Casio Scientific Calculator Watch wearing engineer, and a hobbyist who restored old clocks and Accutron watches.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
First watch I used was a Mickey Mouse watch, but that was a hand me down from my brother so it’s his. The first watch I owned was an early-1980s Armitron digital watch that my parents got me at K-Mart.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
The details of my watches are quite inconsequential. Where do I begin…?
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
People into watches are ridiculously opinionated about watches. What can you afford that makes you smile? Get that, and wear it with whatever.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Never happening: Vacheron Constantin and Breguet; Top shelf, probably never happening: Blancpain; Stretch shelf: JLC and Omega; Middle shelf: Oris, Seiko Prospex, and Junghans; Bargain bin: Lorier, Hamilton, Seiko, Baltic, and Tornek-Rayville; Beater: Casio and Casio G-Shock.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Rolex 1016 Space-Dweller. Rolex is not my favorite brand, but the Explorer is my favorite watch. I am also a huge space nerd. This has the mix of a classic 1016 Explorer with a weird Mercury-program-in-Japan-limited-backstory.
