Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

Hooked at 12 years old, when my folks had my history teacher over for dinner. He was one of the first groups of American soldiers to liberate Dachau. He had fascinating stories, and while he was telling us, I couldn’t help but stare at his watch, which we later discovered was the A11 he wore while he was in service. I thought he said it was an Elgin, my father thought he said it was a Hamilton. Either way, I found myself looking for watches at garage sales, and then later, putting them on layaway and mowing yards to pay them off. All before I was 20. lol

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

It was a Waltham, automatic men’s diver. I can’t remember the exact year, but I believe it was 1976.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

I have a Shinola Runwell that I bought after my first year of being cancer free. That was eight years ago, so always has a special place in my heart. my son wears it now, but that’s a story for another day.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

it may be obvious, but don’t overlook craigslist and marketplace. Not for the Rolex’s and Breitling’s that could be counterfeit, but the cool old, vintage, Seiko‘s, and Elgin‘s, etc..

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Bell and Ross, Sinn, Hamilton, Longines, Vertex
