Seiko SSK003 - a reliable and affordable GMT

GMT complications are by far my favourite. Being able to track multiple time zones is super useful in my work, where I deal with people around the world in different time zones, and in my travels. So when Seiko announced their GMT watched in 2022, it fully caught my attention. It was great to see the GMT complication coming to the affordable price segment. Yes, there’s been Sellita GMT movements but the offerings have been uninspiring.

So when Seiko came out with their GMT movement in a familiar case, it caught my attention right away.

Come around to last weekend, my wife and I were enjoying a nice casual day when I unexpectedly walked into a local watch store (shout out to Watches of Orlando) and saw the Seiko SSK003 available. I wasn’t looking to purchase it right away. But once I tried it on, it just felt right on the wrist.

And once I got it home and played around with the GMT function, I can clearly say that “I get it now”. The office GMT function is incredibly useful and it has dispelled my misconception that only a traveler GMT is a “true” GMT. I had always been eyeing traveler GMTs and written off office GMTs. Looking back at it, this was irrational and mostly based on the “prestige” of traveler GMTs (think Rolex GMT Master II).

The reality is that both office GMTs and traveler GMTs are both “true” GMTs. They just serve different purposes.

I am super happy with this acquisition. As with all new watch purchases, I can’t seem to take it off. :) It's been 4 straight days of wearing this over anything else in the collection. My wife wasn't pleased when I wanted to sleep with it on my wrist last night.
