... Also day and date come in handy when the days blur together

I'd say heavily damaged, but not destroyed. Now the question is whether the owner will have it restored to original, or just have the movement serviced.

Move over Cartier, there might be a new crash in town!

Another difference is the bezel.  The OP bezel is more bubbly; whereas, the Explorer bezel is more angular

It's a small thing, but it definitely makes an impact on how the products feel. Dial aside, the OP feels dressier and the Explorer feels more utilitarian (and more in-line with vintage Rolex design).

This difference is more noticeable in person. Everyone has their own taste. I'm more of a sports watch guy. The first time I saw a modern OP in a boutique, I knew it wasn't for me.

@martini and @In_awe. This watch isn't my cup of tea either. Too big and too loud of a design.

However, this makes a lot of sense as the launch product:

  • 9900 series movements are big (i.e., it easier to work with a new fiddly technology)
  • This is most likely a "low volume" product. Omega can spend more time with each individual unit making sure its within spec. (I believe Omega similarly launched the 3861 movements in the gold speed pro Apollo XI).
  • Omega can renew interest in a product line. I don't think the Speedmaster "Racing" series is as popular as the "57" or the "Professional" series.
  • Auto enthusiasts are likely to geek out about cutting edge tech improvements.

Warby Parker for watches would be amazing!

It really comes down to the context and intent of the sales associate. People often buy a watch to mark an important life event.

Are they congratulating someone for the life event? Or, are they congratulating you for making it through the wait list? The former is sweet and personable, the latter is arrogant.

I like everything about the watch except the second hand. The dash of red above the lume plot seems unnecessary and distracting
