I got the call (email)

Ok fellow crunchers, I got the call for a no-date sub yesterday, Im not a rich guy at all, just obsessed. Having said that, Ive turned down a lot from the Rolex AD this year, (a blue skydweller, a dk blue OP and a rolex green OP...) If I buy the no-date sub and the call comes in for what I really want, I  wont be able to afford it.

Ive been holding out for the call for a 2 tone daytona or a stainless GMT (any configuration).

Am I crazy to turn down a no-date sub? I happen to live in one of those unique places that has a ton of product historically and after covid hit, the tourists couldnt get here.  This encouraged the AD to sell to us locals.

What would you guys do?

I would buy the No-Date Sub, and then if the Daytona or the GMT come in, I would flip the No-Date Sub, and use that cash to buy what I really want!

So long as Rolexes are selling on the secondary market for above MSRP, this is a no-lose proposition!  Why not take advantage of it???

Beyond that, you could get hit by a bus tomorrow - or, more likely, AI will murder all of us.  Why not enjoy your life today?

Did you ASK for all these watches you've turned down?

I turned down a Sub last year but I had never asked for it or shown any interest.

I think if you keep turning down items you actually asked for, that could be a problem.

If you didn't ask for any of them, I don't see an issue with saying no.

I would never recommend buying an item just to flip it.  Many ADs look for that and if they see it, you wont get anything from that AD again. Plus, from a watch enthusiast point of view, I think buying a watch for the sole purpose of selling it is shady. IMO.

Ive never flipped anything yet. Im told that they only make 1 no-date for every 11 dated subs, so I consider the rarity. This decision boils down to "dry powder". Ive bought 7 rolexes from this AD in 2 years, most professional models (apart from one mistake for a girlfriend, ugh). Im just torn. Hotwatchchick, your last comment plays a part, too. I could die tomorrow. I did have a black sub on my list, but its in last place (My AD wants you to have no more than 3 list cards in at any time).

My first place watches have been a stainless GMT on jubilee (or any), a daytona 2 tone (or any without diamonds), and a black sub (any). I might be screwed and have to take it. The other watches I turned down I did not ask for (sort of). The skydweller was always on my list. Then one day the AD called and asked if I want a black one. I went for it and bought it. A month later she called and offered the blue one and I couldnt afford it.

My AD spends time trolling for their units on popular watch sites, so I dont dare flip one. That said, I dont want to. I love em. I just dont know what or who Im going to give them to when Im shuffling off this mortal coil.

You never HAVE to take it.  If it's not what you truly want you'll regret getting it...especially if you get the call for one you truly want sooner rather than later.  You have a solid history with them.  If you tell them what you are thinking, just be honest and explain, then it should work out.

I'm with @HotWatchChick69, buy this one, enjoy it, and when 'the call' comes for what you really want, enough time will have passed that you could move this one on without guilt or shame from the community and pick up the one you want. Just don't tell the AD that's what you're doing.

Wait...

You've bought SEVEN in 2 years and you claim you can't afford another?

Its true, I have good job and no expenses and eat a lot of ramen noodles. However, I want just 2 more watches...

Its Christmas time, UnholiestJedi, and I have 3 20 somethings to contend with, 2 of which are still in college (1 in law school), so I can spend only in certain traunches. When school bills are due, I dont spend. Most of my calls came around Christmas and January, btw. Most watches were bought because someone else couldnt take theirs when they got the call.

Sign of the times!  Impending recession means good news for those who have some extra cash lying around!

But, none of that matters in the least, once Skynet comes after us...

With the added context that you've already purchased 7, screw the No-Date Sub.  Wait for the one you want.

I've purchased 12 GS'es in the past 2 years.  When my AD calls, I turn down anything they offer that I don't absolutely want.  I also don't buy magazine subscriptions when thugs posing as kids selling magazine subscriptions to support their sports teams show up at my front door, canvassing our neighborhood to figure out when to try to break into our homes.  I don't see why one should purchase something one does not really want, just because one is offered that thing.

Just to hit the point home, here's the same question, but posed in an entirely different context. 😜

"I got the call for a Double Cheeseburger.  What I really want instead, though, is a steak.  Am I crazy to turn down the Double Cheeseburger?"

I’m with you here. @wyaTT63 if have purchase history and are offered something you don’t want then turn down the no-date and tell them you’re waiting for the others you asked for. 7 in 2 years means they’re going to keep tempting you regardless, but they’re also not going to pass you when the models you want finally do come in.
